Pandal-Hopping Etiquette & Survival Tips
With millions of citizens taking to Kolkata’s streets each night, navigating the festival smoothly requires local smarts, respectful etiquette, and comfortable preparation.
1. Wear Breathable, Cushioned Footwear
You will easily log 12,000 to 20,000 steps per night. Avoid high heels or new un-broken shoes. Wear well-cushioned sneakers or comfortable flat sandals with arch support.
2. Carry Reusable Water & Stay Hydrated
Kolkata autumn nights can remain humid. Keep a reusable water bottle and glucose packet handy. Enjoy street food like phuchka, rolls, and kachori from busy stalls with clean turnover.
3. Respect Barricades & Queue Flow
Kolkata Police set up long wooden barricade channels for mega crowd pujas. Keep moving inside the pandal court so visitors behind can catch a glimpse. Do not stop in narrow exit channels for selfies.
4. Bhog Offering Etiquette
Community bhog (sacred feast of khichuri, labra, chutney, and payesh) is typically served between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM on Saptami and Ashtami. Check with local committee counters for coupons or open seating.
5. Night Safety & Police Assistance Booths
Kolkata Durga Puja nights are remarkably safe, welcoming women and families until 4 AM. Kolkata Police operate assistance booths and missing-person medical desks near all major intersections. Keep your phone charged and note nearest Metro station entry gates.
